Past Exhibits
Umpqua Valley Arts is dedicated to the belief that the arts are an indispensable element of a thriving and meaningful community, and that arts education should be available to all.
Our exhibition programming is inspired by our energetic community, the geography in which our organization is situated, and the unique history of our region and our institution. When we are willing to consider ideas & art together, we are learning to acknowledge and respect the histories that bind us together, and the changing world that surrounds us.

ABOUT THE JUROR: ERIK SANDGREN
UVA is honored to have Erik Sandgren as our guest juror. Erik Sandgren has long been associated with the culture of the visual arts in the Northwest. Erik makes paintings and prints of the light, patterns, and motion of nature that evoke the sensory experience of mythic landscapes. He structures deftly layered pigments and gestural shapes into topographical references which are observed, imagined, and remembered. He has attended Yale and Cornell, which deepened his art experience, and has participated in many sabbaticals to Europe. His work can be found in private and public collections nationally.

ABOUT THE CURATOR: ARVIE SMITH
“I am an artist and educator. My paintings have always been based on the Black man’s state of mind, ever-evolving in the layers of complex history and the day’s political, social, and cultural displays. I confront omissions and violations in American history, and I am fascinated by the commonplace allegiance to the denial of truths running through the hall of our government. I extensively research each painting and draw inspiration from scholars and writers, including James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Maya Angelou, W.E.B. Du Bois, Michelle Alexander, and most recently, Isabel Wilkerson. My paintings are tableaus of metaphors, icons, and popularized tropes to address contemporary racial politics. I address my viewers with a warm, vibrant palette, humor, rhythm, and movement punctuated by the derogatory stereotypes created to define Black bodies. At age 84, I paint daily, in my home studio in Portland, Oregon.”

During this time of unimaginable and rapid change when the URBAN | RURAL differences are highlighted in political rhetoric and policies, artwork created in Oregon’s rural areas offers the possibility of connecting with those parts of Oregon considered remote and removed. We look to bridge urban and rural differences for greater understanding. Umpqua Valley Arts was thrilled to showcase the breadth and depth of artwork created throughout Oregon’s rural areas in this exhibit!

Stories Told by Water by Artist Member, Leah Wilson
Red Door Gallery
June 11th – August 22nd, 2021
Leah Wilson is a visual artist and writer who lives and works in Eugene, Oregon. After earning her Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, she lived in Nevada City, California, located in California’s Gold Country in the Sierra Nevada foothills. From this home base, she spent years making art and teaching whitewater kayaking. Letting her interests overlap, she created a pivotal project influenced by the environmental decision-making processes of scientists, resource managers, and special interest groups during the FERC relicensing of her local watershed, the South Yuba River. This experience, as well as Wilson’s many years of running whitewater, is the inspiration behind her creative process.

A WATCHED POT ALWAYS BOILS
Hallie Brown Ford Gallery
April 2nd – June 4th, 2021
2020 saw the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women’s constitutional right to vote. While this amendment sounds ideal in theory, the truth was that many women of color found themselves still unable to exercise their legal right to cast a ballot, depriving them of their voice. As the New York Times noted in an editorial evaluating the 19th Amendment’s centennial, “millions of other women… remained shut out of the polls until the voting rights act was passed in 1965.” This history has informed and structured today’s American society. UVA’s artistic celebration of the 19th amendment’s anniversary examined agency, access, and opportunity through an intersectional lens to highlight what it takes for one to participate fully in American society, tell their story, and shape the destiny of their community. This show celebrates voices and identities of those who have found ways to narrate their own histories and define agency within these social spaces.
