Themes in Art

Children in Art

An historical view of paintings of children reflecting prevailing styles. Using mirrors and templates, students draw themselves.
*Grades 1 - 5

Peace

Visions of peace by well-known artists become the inspiration for students to illustrate themselves at peace. Line as it is used by artists is stressed. Students are given graphite water-soluble crayons to create images.

THE ART OF INDIA: Kolams & mandalas, arts of India made with rice paste. * *Grades 3 - 5


THE ART OF THE BOOK: Students will make a simple book ready to illustrate. *Grades 1 - 5

 

BUTTON BLANKETS: NEW*


the art of Pacific Northwest Native Americans: the traditional art of button blankets. Students will learn about the designs and their function in native societies. Then using patterns they will create their own version of button

blankets. *Grades 1 – 5

SCIENCE & ART: the art of M.C. Escher

Students will draw the four stages of the life of a butterfly on the four sides of a hand-made tetrahedron.
*Grades 1 - 5

SCIENCE & ART: the art of Vincent Van Gogh

Students will illustrate the familiar planets in the style of Van Gogh.

SCIENCE & ART: Botanical illustration and Corps of Discovery.

Using Spring wildflowers, students will create pencil drawings after learning the history of botanical illustration with emphasis on the drawings of Meriwether Lewis.  *Grades 1 - 5

 

GEOMETRY OF ART: the art of Mandalas:  NEW*


Using compasses, CDs and protractors, students will use a circle to express themselves by drawing and then coloring items they value. Grades 1 - 5blankets. Grades 3 - 5


WEATHER: NEW*


Students are introduced to artists whose work reflects a pre-occupation with weather. The vocabulary includes terms used in meteorology. Finally students will draw weather related pictures from their own experience.

Classrooms: Draw Your Classroom

Based on the art of Winslow Homer, students will illustrate their own classroom. Grades 3,4 and 5.

The Forest and Emily Carr

Canadian artist Emily Carr is the inspiration for students to illustrate their feelings from experiences in forest.
*Grades 1 - 5

Principles of Art

Color & Pointillism

Using the work of Georges Seurat, students learn the principle of visual color missing. Q-tips are provided to paint simple shades.

Color & Light

Based on the work of Claude Monet, this lesson illustrates color mixing and sources of light that affect color. Using acrylic paint, students will practice the same color-mixing principles used by Monet.
*Grades 3 - 5

Value

The concept of light and dark value is taught using the art of Georges Seurat and Chuck Close. Students will create images using inked stamp pads.
*Grades 1 - 5

Balance

Symmetry and asymmetry is taught using the art of Diego Rivera, Wayne Thiebaud, M.C. Escher. Students will be asked to draw and recognize symmetry and asymmetry.
*Grades 1 - 5

Line

Line as used by artists to direct vision. Students will see the work of Edgar Degas, Wayne Thiebaud, Millard Sheets and M.C. Escher. Using graphite and watercolor sticks, students will create a work of art applying the principle of line.
*Grades 1 - 5

SHAPE:
the Art of Paul Cezanne In observance of the century since his death, students will draw shapes based on the ideas of Cezanne. Grades 1 - 5.

 

Techniques in Art

Color Field Painting

Using watercolor and referring to the artwork of Raoul Dufy and Helen Frankenthaler, students will try to define shapes from an abstraction of color.
*Grades 1 - 5

RECYCLED ART: extending the life of junk

Alexander Calder: Students will create a circus from wine corks, bottle caps, wire and other materials after viewing a short film about Calder who had done the same.
*Grades 1 - 5

Collage: Based on the work of Pablo Picasso this lesson gives students a pre-cut shape from printed matter. They are encouraged to draw a setting for the shape, mimicking the art of Picasso. *Grades 1 - 5

Mosaic: Using refuse objects of similar size and shape, a design is created by gluing them into a mosaic. The lesson includes a study of history of mosaic. *Grades 1 - 5

CLAY: the importance of a pot

Students are given an introduction to the history of Clay and its importance. Then, using a low fire clay, the students create a pinch pot and embellish it with incised designs if appropriate. All materials are provided including clay and firing. Pots are not glazed, but can be painted with acrylic or other water-based paintings. *Grades 1 - 5
