Yvonne Young (Storytelling)

About the Artist

Yvonne Young is an eclectic educator and storyteller, who invites audiences into her stories using audience participation techniques. She tells stories from her heart, evoking personal connections and memories, and empowering listeners to see each story in their own mind’s eye. Her storytelling assemblies and residencies instill love of language, stimulate imagination, inventive thinking, and emotional development, develop listening skills, and promote awareness and appreciation of the similarities of all peoples. Yvonne, a retired elementary teacher, offers storytelling workshops for both children and adults, and serves as Oregon State Liaison to the National Storytelling Network. She performs at schools, community events, and festivals in Oregon and the Northwest. Yvonne is author of “The ABC’s of Storytelling,” published in A Beginner’s Guide to Storytelling by the National Storytelling Network.

Grade Levels

K - Adult

Overall Goals

Instilling love of language, stimulating imagination, inventive thinking, and emotional development, and developing listening skills, as well as awareness and appreciation of other cultures. I want to touch children’s hearts with the cultural values and universal truths embedded in stories. My hope is to introduce them to characters with which they can identify, and situations, which may provide guidance for their own decision-making.

Staff Development

I offer either an orientation to a residency as a staff development presentation or a presentation at the end offering suggestions for continuing to work with students and storytelling, or both. Ideally, the orientation would be about two weeks before the residency begins.

Facility/Supplies

Facility needs to be quiet (no jackhammers working outside the room, for example). I would need a microphone, student desk or small table and a chair. I prefer a clip-on mic, but a standing mic is fine. If working in a classroom, the mic is normally not necessary.
