Peppi Melick (Imagination in Clay)

About the Artist

An Oregon native, Peppi studied at SOSC and U of O and has attended numerous workshops and adult education courses in pottery. She has been involved in making and selling pottery as a business since 1975. Teaching pottery to adults and children as well as people with disabilities has been an important part of her life since 1980. I have "experience in all aspects of clay work: throwing, hand-building, glazing and firing".

Grade Levels

K - 6

Teaching Objectives

I am available for traditional residencies of 1, 2, or 3 weeks, as well as flexible scheduling such as 1 day a week. A very workable schedule is Monday thru Thurday on one week for clay work, then Friday of the next week for glaze and finish.

Staff Development

I offer teacher in-service in kiln firing before the residency and/or a longer teacher in-service in clay work for the fun of it after my residency with the kids is over.

Residencies

Handbuilding projects:

slab tiles
heart pockets
butterflies
slab masks
slab coffee cups or cylinders
slab wizards

rolled coil worms, caterpillars, snakes
coil baskets

pinch bowls
pinch animals
sculpture

projects using all three handbuilding methods

Depending on the ages, and the frequency with which i see the different groups, we progress through the basic steps and move on to more difficult items.

The exact items we make are co-ordinated with the class focus (ex: the sea, farm animals, reptiles, butterflies etc)

If desired we can arrange to bring my throwing wheel to demonstrate and have some hands-on experience with the wheel.
I have support material for many projects: puzzles, quizzes, video and audio tapes, story books and posters. i can give a talk about the life of an artist, career opportunities, historical perspective, collection and processing of local clay.
I can give an inservice for the teachers to use the kiln, glazes, handling of pottery pieces. I can give an afterschool teachers' clay-play time.
