Mary Eckman (Acrylic / Watercolor)
About the Artist
Mary Eckman is a teacher and an artist. She holds a BA
in art, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in art
education and a current Oregon teaching license. As an artist Mary enjoys painting with watercolors and acrylics, creating jewelry and making art with her two young daughters.

Teaching Objectives
Mary teaches to the National Visual Arts Standards . Her teaching goals also include:

* expose children to new ideas and ways of seeing
* enrich vocabulary and understanding of cultures
* promote respect and confidence
*establish connections between visual arts and other disciplines
Residencies
Mary’s residencies can be tailored to meet the needs of any school. They can be integrated, thematic, or skill and media based. Below are some examples of possible residencies. If you do not see what you are looking for, please ask.
Creative Painting
*watercolor or acrylic painting
*students gain skills in basic painting techniques and confidence in their artistic abilities
*students explore and learn about the elements and principles of art
*students learn creative problem solving skills
*students learn about historical artists and events
*can link to current classroom curriculum such as historical events, poetry writing and story telling, science, math or subject matter such as respect or diversity
Basket Making
*students learn basic skills in basket weaving
*students gain confidence and develop fine motor skills
*students learn about the historical context of basket making traditions
Multi-cultural Paper Cutting
*students learn about paper cutting traditions from around the world Poland (Wycinanki), Mexico (Papel Picado) and China (Jainzhi)
*students gain confidence and develop fine motor skills
*students learn about the historical context of paper cutting traditions
Staff Development
Mary can provide teachers with a variety of follow- up activities for their students after the completion of her residency. She can aid teachers in designing art lesson plans incorporating current curriculum. Mary can also offer information about the importance of art in education, which can be shared with school staff and/or community members.
Supplies
Creative Painting – Supplies needed include paints, brushes and paper, water containers, paper for drawing and pencils, and black permanent markers (optional). Access to a sink is also needed.
Yarn Basket Making – Supplies needed include yarn, scissors, tape, coiling core, and weaving needles. Crayons or colored pencils and paper are also nice to have but not necessary.
Multi-cultural Paper Cutting - various papers, scissors.
