Manya Meador
About the Artist
Manya Meador, a long-time resident of Douglas County, is a retired elementary teacher and former substitute in Roseburg, Glide, Sutherlin and Winston. Her varied arts involvement has included past membership on the UVAA Board of Directors; membership on UVAA committees; chair of the Summer Arts Festival; theater work at UCC and UACT; membership in various musical groups such as Vintage Singers; and work in liturgical arts.
Manya is an accomplished Calligrapher and a member of the Valley Calligrapher's Guild (VCG). Attendance at workshops and presentations gives her opportunities to expand and enrich her calligraphy. She is currently exploring ways to connect calligraphy and the book arts.
She presents workshops for children in the UVAA summer arts program and for adutls through continuing education classes, workshops and private lessons. Some of her work can currently be seen on the VCG web site where work was shown at the Mt. Angel Abby.

Teaching Objectives
Many will share her passion for the art of lettering with students and teachers through the UVAA Arts in Residence program. Although mainly skills/media based, this residency can be integrated and thematic. Manya will work with the schools arts coordinator and teachers to provide a successful arts experience for students.
Residencies
In this residency students will know and understand how letters and alphabets were developed. They wil learn letter formation and practice various calligraphy shapes. Students will use calligraphy to create a personal project.
- Students will explore the history of various alphabets, examing why they were developed, how they're formed and ways they're used.
- Students will examine the world around them in terms of letters, their use and visual impact.
- Students will experiment with color, shape, texture and form as related to letters and alphabets.
- Students will be able to create the shapes of letters that form the Italic family.
- Students will examine illuminated letters and create an illuminated monogram that tells a story.
- Projects might include: name cards, book plates, using quotations, poetry or cards. The project might also apply to curricula or theme.
Staff Development
Since this is a skill and should be practices, Manya will provide resources and plans for follow-up projects that can be done in the classroom.
Facility/Supplies
Basic art supplies, wide-lined notebook paper and chisel-pointed felt-tip pens. Special supplies will be determined by lesson and project. Ordering information will be provided at the time of scheduling.
