Barbara Rainey
About the Artist
As a life-long educator and artist, Barbara shares her belief in the interrelatedness of the arts and learning in UVAA Art Residencies. Barbara is a former classroom teacher, gifted education facilitator, Title I teacher/supervisor, elementary school principal and curriculum coordinator. Believing that all students are gifted, she helped create and implement Multiple Intelligences workshops for all students. Firefly Press was created so students could self-publish their work. She is an educational consultant specializing in brain-compatible teaching and learning.

Teaching Objectives
The UVAA residencies provide exploration and development in literacy, creativity, visual arts, and core curricula; meet Oregon’s Content and Visual Arts Standards; and can be adapted for curriculum integration, theme focus or skill/medium exploration.
Residencies
Various literacies are explored, developed and presented through mixed media and book structures. Sample topics include:
- In the style of… - Students will explore techniques and media used by selected picture book illustrators, i.e. Eric Carle, Ezra Jack Keats, Mary Engelbreit
- Tell Me a Story – After examining a variety of paintings, students will visualize settings, characters and events to recreate an event, either personal or historical.
- What a Character! – Students will explore character development through the integration of literature and visual arts. Portraits and self-portraits will be studied, as well as characters in literature. Students may create portraits, self-portraits or biographical sketches.
- The Image is in the Word – Students will explore the world of word-art, also known as concrete poetry. They will create a portfolio of word images.
- What’s My Line? – Students will explore line expression and create a book of expressive lines.
- Thinking like da Vinci – da Vinci’s contributions in drawing, painting, architecture, botany or journals may be explored. These may be content and grade-level specific.
- Creative Journals – Students will learn the form and function of several book structures and create a personal book. These books might become Nature Journals, Alphabet Books, Magical/Marvelous Me, etc.
- Funky Books - How can I create a book with that? Creativity and problem-solving will be the focus of these lessons. Students will explore altered books, book sculptures, RRR (Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse) books.
- 3-M Books: Movable, Mechanical, Mysterious – After exploring the principles of movement in the arts, science, math and literature, students will create pop-ups, flaps, levers, pockets and pouches to use in a book structure . The art of Robert Sabuda and others will be explored.
Staff Development
Barbara will work with the school’s AIR Coordinator and teachers to determine specific topics, content integration, grades, skills and media. She is also available to help develop visual arts projects specific to a curricula or skill.
Facility/Supplies
Basic supplies such as scissors, markers, paints, pencils, glue, paper in many sizes and colors. Supplies specific to a topic such a book board, mat board, decorative papers. Equipment needed: paper cutter, overhead projector/in-focus, VCR/TV set-up.
