Umpqua Valley Arts Association offers Artist-in-Residencies that integrate the arts directly into the school’s curriculum.  Teachers work with our artists to design lessons that teach core concepts through art projects and activities.

UVAA artists work with schools to design specific Residencies based on school themes.  Such themes might include citizenship principles like Respect, Responsibility, Honesty.

Through the generous contribution of the Hallie E. Ford Endowment for Arts Education through the Oregon Community Foundation and administered by UVAA, we are offering financial assistance to schools to help off-set the cost of residencies.  Each Douglas County school will be provided up to two, one-week residencies at a discounted price of $150.

UVAA Residencies can focus on a certain medium, such as clay, or skills found in drawing and painting.  These Residencies introduce a material and the technical skills used in creating art.

Along with Residencies, schools may utilize artists from our roster who provide performing arts skill such as theater, story telling, puppetry or dance.  Often the art form is show cased through an assembly.  Assemblies can also be arranged without the accompanying Residency.

A week-long Artist Residency provides up to four contact sessions per day, over five days (20Hours).  This is negotiable as the artist works to design a Residency with the school’s coordinator.

Traditionally, Artist-in-Residencies have been available for 2-4 week projects, however since our arts residencies are designed to meet the specific needs in each school situation, some will convene over a period of time, some may be shorter and some extending over several weeks.

Schools will be responsible for the cost of supplies.  Specific arrangements for ordering supplies will vary.

Products from Residencies may result in individual artwork for portfolios or student body artwork such as a school-wide mural or mosaic sculptures.  UVAA Residences as well, should always result in an increased appreciation and understanding of the historical and cultural significance, and the critical thinking required to solve artistic problems.

Your school’s Principal, teacher or school volunteer coordinator may call 541-672-2532 or email Kathy Henderson directly at kathy@uvarts.com to begin scheduling a Residency or an Assembly.

Residencies cost $600 per week and Assemblies $120 per performance.  Some artists may require travel reimbursement.

Contact kathy@uvarts.com for information on how to schedule your residency!

Ed Moorin Trust

Ed Moorin had a lifelong love affair with the performing arts dating to 1960’s.  His career spanned four decades where he enjoyed success performing in Las Vegas.  In his later years he gave generously of his time and talents entertaining at retirement homes and community functions.

One of his wishes was to provide opportunities for young people to have access to the performing and musical arts.  Upon his death in 2007, a trust was established to provide musical scholarships for youth.

The Ed Moorin Trust, administered through Umpqua Valley Arts Association, will offer small grants to young people to support their artistic endeavors. Individual grants to students range between $250 and $750.  The Ed Moorin Trust will provide a source of funding in a non-traditional way to individuals who may not otherwise qualify for grants because they are not a 501(c)(3).

Among the projects eligible for funding are students in band and/or choir who need equipment, music lessons for individual students and tuition for music or performing art camps.  K-12 students living in Douglas County who are focused on music or performing arts may apply.

The deadline for application is October 1, 2010.
